BSU conference opener against LA Tech last Friday was suspended due to snow-storm after regulation (tied, it should’ve gone to overtime) because “officials ruled that it was too dangerous to continue the match”. Say what? What’s so dangerous in playing on the snow? After all, there are deep snow soccer and even swamp soccer World Championships.
But seriously, just get that orange ball and keep the game going. Playing in the wet snow is not any different as playing in the rain (as they did for the most of the match) as far as pitch concerned, and judging by the pics and what we saw around the town, visibility wasn’t that big of an issue:
What’s more pathetic — letting LA Tech to take advantage of the bad weather (using the words of BSU Sports Information) to draw the match with two goals in final seven minutes. First was a result of an unlucky slip by Boise’s defender which was followed by one-on-one (still, given the score and conditions that more than favourable for defending, there should’ve been more bodies in the back). Second was a hospital ball, the back pass, that got bogged down in the snow with Tech’s forward outrunning Bronco’s defence and pouncing it in with 5 minutes to go. There hardly can be an excuse for poor judgement, lack of common sense and, mayhaps, failure of the coaching staff to prepare the team for such conditions (We all knew about the rain and snow beforehand, innit?).
